Building A New Home Vs Buying An Existing Home

New home building has taken back off in the Twin Cities and surrounding metro areas.  For a few years while the foreclosures were strong and home values were so low, it was very hard for new construction home builders to compete with the low prices of the short sales and bank owned homes.  Now the market has come up a good amount and in some cases building new is very similar price wise to buying an existing home.

Typically I see new home prices in many areas of the North and West metro of the Twin Cities very equal to an existing home.  However, that existing home will have a finished basement perhaps compared to the new home having an unfinished basement.  That existing home may have a deck and appliances priced in, or perhaps they have some upgrades like landscaping, hardwood floors or some other extra that you would pay more to add into your new construction home.

With a new construction home you will likely need to wait 4-6 months before the home is built and ready to move into. That may not work with everyone’s time frame.  However here are some benefits of building a new home:

1)  Its New! You are the only owner and get brand new everything.

2) You can choose some options that customize to your tastes.

3) You get into a new neighborhood with other similar nice and new homes.

4) With it being new there will not be much in the way of  maintenance expense to do on the homes major components for several years.
